Medicine packaging in a pharmacy involves the use of unit dose packaging for a long-term care facility. The facility had been experiencing medication errors and confusion among staff regarding medication administration. The pharmacy decided to implement a unit dose packaging system to improve medication safety and efficiency.
At Rite Technologies’ we understand the importance of the same and integrated with vendors like MOT etc, which can help Pharmacies to cater to long-term care facility and assisted patients with various customized unit dose packaging systems/services. Medications were packaged in pre-filled blister packs with each dose clearly labelled with the medication name, dosage, and administration time. The blister packs were color-coded to correspond with the time of day they were to be administered (e.g. blue for morning, red for afternoon, etc.). The pharmacy also provided a medication administration record (MAR) for each patient that included the medication schedule and detailed instructions for administration.
After implementing the unit dose packaging system, the long-term care facility saw a significant reduction in medication errors and an increase in staff efficiency. The clear labelling and color-coded system made it easier for staff to identify and administer medications at the correct time, reducing the risk of errors. The customized packaging also made it easier for staff to manage multiple medications for each patient.
In addition, the pharmacy was able to streamline the medication ordering and delivery process, as medications were packaged and labelled in advance. This reduced the amount of time and effort required by both the pharmacy and the long-term care facility staff, allowing them to focus on other aspects of patient care.
Overall, this case study demonstrates the effectiveness of unit dose packaging in improving medication safety and efficiency in a long-term care facility.
